What Does Calcium Do?
Calcium is responsible for construction, formation and maintenance of healthy bones and teeth. This function helps reduce the occurrence of osteoporosis. It is also a vital component in blood clotting systems and wound healing. It helps to control blood pressure, nerve transmission, and release of neurotransmitters. It's an essential component in the production of enzymes and hormones regulating digestion, energy and fat metabolism. It helps transport ions (electrically charged particles) across the cell membranes and is essential for muscle contraction. Calcium assists in maintaining all cells and connective tissues in the body.
North Coast Naturals Organic Calcium Powder™ is a unique sea-plant derived, multi-mineral source, rich in Calcium, Magnesium and over 70 other important trace minerals.
North Coast Naturals Organic Calcium Powder™ possesses a multitude of properties, physical and chemical which make it the natural choice for food fortification & enrichment, health supplement manufacturers and consumers alike.
North Coast Naturals Organic Calcium Powder™ is a natural product that is produced from the skeletal remains of a particular family of seaweeds known as "Lithothamnion Calcareum." It is harvested from the clear Atlantic waters off the southwest coast of Ireland under exclusive license. The raw material is purified, sterilized, dried, milled and packed to provide a natural source of mineral enrichment for food, nutraceutical and supplement markets. The dedicated production facility in Ireland is fully ISO & HACCP Certified and adheres to strict control approaching GMP guidelines.
There is no seaweed smell as the whole seaweed itself is not used — just the skeletal remains.
The elemental calcium occurs naturally as a carbonate. The absorption factor has been tested and studies show a higher absorption rate with the powder used in North Coast Naturals Organic Calcium Powder™ than with just plain calcium carbonate milled from the earth. This increased absorption is due in part to the presence of 70 trace minerals. More studies are showing that calcium supplementation alone is not as good at delivering calcium into the bones, as is supplementing with calcium plus a broad array of minerals.
The North Coast Naturals Organic Calcium Difference
It should be stressed again, that while most calcium supplements are isolated minerals that are either chelated (bonded) in labs or simply from crushed earth particles, North Coast Naturals Organic Calcium Powder™ is "whole food" derived. It is neither artificially made nor is it bonded in a lab. This may be another reason why its uptake is more pronounced than other calcium forms. In addition, this natural form of calcium is alkaline in nature, primarily due to the multitude of trace minerals and calcium carbonate. Improving alkaline nutrition can have a favourable effect on bone mineral density. Its strong nutritional alkalinity makes it an ideal supplement supportive of whole body alkalinity.
Factors that improve calcium absorption include adequate amounts of protein, magnesium, phosphorous, trace minerals and Vitamin D. Conditions that reduce calcium absorption include high or excessive intakes of oxalates and phytates, found in foods such as spinach. Consumption of alcohol, coffee, sugar, or medications such as diuretics, tetracycline, aluminum containing antacids, hormonal imbalances and stress reduces absorption of calcium and other minerals.
Lack of exercise reduces calcium absorption as well as causes an increase in calcium losses. A lifestyle of immobility also leads to calcium deficiency. Calcium deficiency increases risk of bone disorders such as osteoporosis, and may increase the chances of obesity.
Human Clinical Study
In April 2005, a Human Clinical trial involved a double blind, placebo controlled, parallel group study in postmenopausal women to assess the effects of mineral supplements on markers of bone turnover. The treatments administered 600 mg of elemental calcium from North Coast Naturals Organic Calcium Powder™, Calcium Carbonate or Tri Calcium Phosphate compared with a placebo. The trial ran for a period of three months. Blood samples were analyzed for various markers of metabolism including PTH. The supplements were compared by their ability to influence the concentration of these markers over the longer period of this trial.
Over the longer duration of this trial the calcium in North Coast Naturals Organic Calcium Powder™ resulted in 102% greater calcium uptake than calcium carbonate and over 400% more than tricalcium phosphate, as measured in reduction of serum PTH hormone concentration. (PTH hormone levels go up when calcium is deficient — the lower the PTH hormone level, the more calcium that is present in the bone). The study findings also suggest a reduction in concentration of urinary deoxypyridinolene (DPD), an indicator of bone breakdown, in patients that took the calcium in North Coast Naturals Organic Calcium Powder™ treatment during the study compared with the other treatments.
Evidence gathered over a period of long term use at 600 mg of elemental calcium from North Coast Naturals Organic Calcium Powder™ per day has shown the enhanced bone mineral density effects of the calcium in North Coast Naturals Organic Calcium Powder™ on hip and particularly lumbar region. The DEXA (bone mineral density) scan shows how dense (healthy) a bone's mineral content is. A DEXA scan test that was performed on a 72 year old man suggested the mineral density of his lumbar bone was more typical of a person aged 25-35 years. The same findings were made on the hip bone. This is noteworthy as it shows the enhancing properties of calcium in North Coast Naturals Organic Calcium Powder™ to strengthen bone mineral density.
The subject's DEXA measurements showed no indicator for osteoporosis — with calcium intake being key in the war against osteoporosis, daily intake of 600 mg of elemental calcium from North Coast Naturals Organic Calcium Powder™ appears to deliver on the promise of what calcium supplementation should offer all users — healthier, less brittle bones, and whole food alkaline nutritional support.

Dulse is an ingredient in North Coast Naturals Organic Bio Greens. What purpose does this ingredient serve?
Dulse is a red algae (Rhodophyta) also referred to as Rhodymenia palmata (Linnaeus) Greville. It grows on both the northern Atlantic and Pacific coasts of Canada. Dulse is an ingredient that acts as a compliment to the other ingredients in North Coast Naturals Organic Bio Greens, it is also a good source of minerals and vitamins compared with other vegetables and it contains all trace elements needed by humans and has a high protein content. It is a well-known food and medicine in Eastern Canada, fresh dulse can be eaten directly off the rocks before sun-drying. Sun-dried dulse is eaten as is or is ground to flakes or a powder. It can be pan fried quickly into chips, baked in the oven covered with cheese, with salsa, or simply microwaved briefly. It can also be used in soups, chowders, sandwiches and salads, or added to bread/pizza dough. Finely diced, it can also be used as a flavour enhancer in meat dishes, such as chili, it has been an important source of fiber throughout the centuries.
